Yard Waste Recycling

Year-round | Available during open hours
Yard waste drop-offs will be accepted at the facility during normal business hours for a small fee. Residents can expect to pay between $10-$25 per load, depending on load size. Residents can drop off material at SMSC Organics Recycling Facility location until Dakota Prairie Composting’s grand opening in on June 24th, 2025.

Household organics recycling

Year-round | Available during open hours
Sign up for our Household Organics Recycling program and drop off household food waste for free! By collecting food scraps at home for composting, people can reduce greenhouse gases and help create nutrient-rich soil amendments. Together we can keep organics out of the trash—and put this waste to better use!

Seasonal Yard Waste Drop-Off

May 1-31, 2025 | Available during open hours
The Seasonal Fall Yard Waste Drop-Off programs is now at Dakota Prairie Composting! Free drop-off is available for the months of May and October. Paid drop-off is available year-round. For residents of Shakopee, Prior Lake, Savage, Chaska, Louisville Township, and SMSC team members. Participants must show ID or SMSC team member badge.

Free Christmas Tree Drop-Off

Hosted annually for one month after Christmas | Available during open hours
Compost your Christmas tree—drop off your tree, and we’ll do the rest! We accept holiday trees, garlands, and spruce tops. Items must be free of all non-compostable materials, including decorations, flocking, tinsel, and wire.

Free Pumpkin Drop-Off

Nov 1-15, 2024 | Available during open hours
Held annually for the two weeks following Halloween, our pumpkin drop-off program allows residents to recycle their pumpkins and gourds during regular business hours—free of charge. Items must be free of all non-compostable materials, including decorations and candles. The drop-off program diverts thousands of pounds of pumpkins from the landfill and contributes to the creation of our high-quality compost.
